Family pets used to be limited to the dog, cat and a noisy budgie or canary in the corner of the house! Nowadays people are more inclined to look for something different to look after to have around the home and to get a totally different pet experience from.

Exotic pets and unsusal pets from around the world are becoming more and more popluar and no more so that the species we call the Reptile.

Reptiles arose over 300,000,000 years ago, having evolved from a salamander-like ancestor. They represent a completion of the transition from life in water to a fully terrestrial lifestyle (although some reptiles have returned to the water). Waterproof skin and a water-resistant egg means that reptiles can live in places and ways that amphibians can’t. There are over 8,700 currently recognized species, a large majority of which belong to the group Squamata, which includes the lizards, snakes, and worm-like amphibaenians.

Reptiles have the following physical features: they have vertebrate, lungs, and scales or plates. They are cold-blooded, getting all of their heating from the environment (the sun) which can be deadly during cold spells. What could be good about that? Well, this allows the reptiles to eat much less than a mammal of the same weight might. In the desert, for example, this might be useful in terms of competing for food. Also, since they don’t need so much energy from food to heat themselves they can spend more time basking and taking in the sites.

This species contains a wide range of family members but the ones we tend to see being kept as pets are the numerous types of Lizard, the turtle or tortoise and the snake.

Now these pets aren’t for everyone, some may prefer to stay safe and keep to the dog and cat and budgie but for those interested in keeping reptiles it can be a wonderful hobby.

There are numerous types of reptile that can now be purchase from the bearded lizard to the corn snake and from the chameleon to the diamondback terrapin.

There are many factors as to take into consideration before you purchase. For instance, if you can’t handle a dead rat then your unlikely to enjoy looking after and feeding a large snake!

As you look through our site we will give you the advice needed to make a good informed decision as to what sort of Reptile you should look for, we will advise on feeding and careĀ  and also give some basic details on how to breed and what to look for.
